The 10 bolt Chevelle rear end has the 8.2" ring gear from 1964 to early 1972. It wasn't until late 1972 that the 10 bolt 8.5" ring gear was used in Chevelles. Rear spring mounting pads differed in that 1964-66 rear ends used a flat pad with a hole drilled in the center. 1967 rear spring mounting pads had a raised 'hat' design and tapered coil ...8.5 10bolt I just got done rebuilding my 8.5 10 bolt rear end out of my 81 camaro. A good upgrade if you can find one is a caprice cop car rear end. It had a positraction with 30 spline axles my stock were 28 spline, gears were 323s which I changed over to 390s I had to get axles made for it from Moser which were 265.00 shipped to the door.

here is a close-up of a 14 bolt gm rear end. it is in a 1977 chevy k/20. it is a full floating axle, with the massive 10 1/2" ring gear. the axle shafts are held in with bolts. the smaller 14 bolt, with it's 9 1/2" ring gear, is a semi-floating design. it uses c-clips to hold the axles hafts in. just like the 10 bolt, and 12 bolt gm rears.1.
